Galway Bay fm newsroom – 3 and a half million euro in insurance claims was paid out for falls and accidents in the city in the past three years.
That’s according to City Councillor Niall McNelis, who is calling for earlier pedestrianisation of city streets.
Currently, couriers and delivery trucks have until 10.30 each morning to park on pedestrianised streets, such as Shop Street, to unload deliveries.
City businessowner, Councillor McNelis says the trucks are hampering the city’s tourist trade and impacting on businesses.
The Labour councillor says that cobble streets such as Shop Street are also suffering under the weight of some of the trucks.
He says this is contributing to insurance claims against the city.
Speaking to Keith Finnegan, Councillor McNelis says pedestrianising city streets at 9a.m instead of 10.30a.m would have many benefits.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – National crisis pregnancy service Cura, which has a hub in the city, is changing the availability of its services due to a surge in demand.
Cura is Ireland’s Catholic crisis pregnancy support agency, and has seen its website experience a 150 percent increase in visitors over the past two years.
Galway’s Cura hub is based at the Diocesan Educational Center at Newtownsmith, and is one of four main hubs for the agency.
The others are in Dublin, Cork and Waterford.
According to the Irish Times, outreach services will now be provided in the Louth-Monaghan area, Sligo and Tallaght, but some centres in other parts of the country – including Ennis, Athlone and Limerick – will close.
The agency says this is due to an ‘exponential increase’ in online contact, and a 25 percent drop in face-to-face contact at its centres.
However, the Galway hub will remain open.
Cura president Bishop Éamonn Walsh says the service is evaluating how best to meet access needs of clients in an environment very different to that of 1977, when the agency was established.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Department of Social Protection says increasing rent supplement limits would have a minimal impact on the housing crisis in Galway.
It claims an increase would only bring a total of 40 properties within the reach of recipients across Galway, Cork and Dublin.
Rent supplement is paid to people living in private rented accommodation who cannot provide for the cost of their accommodation, and generally applies to those on social welfare and low incomes.
Earlier this year, the Simon Community said only 5 per cent of advertised rental properties nationwide are within reach of those on rent supplement.
According to today’s Irish Times, the department’s research implies that an average of just 13 extra properties would be made available in Galway if the move went ahead.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The go-ahead has been given for a major housing development on the west side of the city, despite the fact that the site is partially within the preferred route corridor for the proposed city bypass.
Kenny Developments and Company Ltd. was initially refused permission by the City Council for 58 residential units at Clybaun Road and Mincloon Cross.
However, An Bórd Pleanála has now overturned that decision.
The plans include 32 four-bedroom semi-detached houses and 12 four-bedroom detached houses in Mincloon.
It would also include a further 2 five-bed homes, six four-bed terraced homes and six three-bed terraced homes.
City planners turned down the plans because part of the site is located inside the preferred route corridor for the proposed city bypass.
However, An Bórd Pleanala has now granted permission for the development with 15 conditions attached, despite the recommendation of its own inspector to refuse permission.
The inspector agreed with Galway City Council’s refusal of permission due to the location of the site on the preferred city bypass route.
One stipulates that a two metre-high concrete block wall be constructed on lands within the application site, along the full length of the eastern site boundary.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Irish Water is refuting claims that there is an increased risk from chemicals in areas of Galway affected by boil notices.

The group had filed a complaint to the EU Ombudsman about what it claims is Irish Water’s failure to be upfront about the dangers of excessive THMs.
