Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway’s newest councillors have taken their seats at County Hall this afternoon.
Ivan Canning has been co-opted to fill the seat of elected Deputy Anne Rabbitte, while Billy Connelly has taken the seat previously occupied by Deputy Sean Canney.
Since the general election last month, which saw Loughrea Councillor Anne Rabbitte and Tuam Councillor Sean Canney take up seats in Galway East in the 32nd Dail, 2 seats have remained vacant at County Hall.
Councillors were only interested in one thing as today’s meeting got underway – and that was filling those seats to bring the chamber back to it’s full compliment of 39 Councillors.
Caherlistrane native Billy Connelly was the first to take a seat, after being proposed by Des Joyce, seconded by Tom Welby and receiving unanimous agreement from all other Councillors.
He received a hearty round of applause, and he thanked Sean Canney and his own family, many of whom were in attendance, and spoke of his long-time history on the fringe of politics.
Councillor Connelly is vowing to do the best job that he could possibly do.
Meanwhile, Portumna man Ivan Canning took his seat moments later, after being proposed by Martina Kinnane, seconded by Mary Hoade, and supported unanimously by all councillors.
The well known hurler, whose extensive family including brother Joe Canning were watching proceedings from the public gallery, was greeted with another warm round of applause as he took his seat.
He told his new colleagues that he was honoured to take the position, and advised them that he was a quick learner – and after he paid tribute to his family, including his five children, he thanked his wife for giving him permission, which drew laughter from the full chamber.
Councillor Canning says the family have always held a strong interest in politics.
Deputy Sean Canney was not at today’s meeting, due to commitments in the Dáil, but Fianna Fail Deputy Anne Rabbitte was there to see her seat filled – she says it’s a great day for Portumna.
Meanwhile, a seat remains Vacant on the City Council, with newly-elected Independent TD for Galway West, Catherine Connolly, remaining tight-lipped on her selected nominee.

Council set to close deal on leasing Galway Airport to film company

Galway Bay fm newsroom – It’s been revealed that Galway County Council is set to close a deal to lease the Galway Airport site to a Film and TV production company.
At today’s meeting of Galway County County, Chief Executive Kevin Kelly informed Councillors that negotiations are at an ‘advanced’ stage.
The meeting heard that the impending deal would see a media company occupy two hangers at the site on a short term lease of eleven months.
It was also revealed that discussions with previous operator, Carnmore Aviation, are no longer ongoing – putting an end to months of speculation over the prospect of commerical aviation returning to the site in the near future.
Currently, Carnmore Flying Club uses the Airport Site at weekends, and the meeting heard that any deal reached with the media company would not impact on this activity.
However, Councillor James Charity questioned what he called the ‘piece-meal’ lease of Galway Airport, and asked if it would harm any potential lease of the full site.
As the deal relates to a short term lease under 12 months, Councillors have no say in the matter, and it will be the County Executive which signs off on the deal.
Councillor Charity says that while the partial lease is welcome news, questions do remain over it’s impact on the future of the site.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Health Service Executive is to work with medical managers to set up a standard policy regarding checks when hiring new doctors.
It follows a case whereby a doctor was hired at University Hospital Galway and three other Irish hospitals despite concerns about his professional conduct.
Dr. Omar Hassan Khalafalla was found guilty of 28 counts of professional misconduct by the Medical Council in January.
A confidential report into his appointment at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, UHG and hospitals in Mayo and Meath was compiled.
The report found that Dr. Hassan was taken off on-call duties within days of starting in Portlaoise after concerns about his performance.
According to today’s Irish Times, the report states that UHG did not seek a reference from Portlaoise for Dr. Hassan.
He provided other references which didn’t relate to his work in the midlands.
The HSE will now work with medical personnel managers to establish a policy to ensure checks, including Garda vetting is carried out.

Supermac’s lodges appeal against EU decision on expansion bid

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Supermac’s has lodged an appeal against an EU decision which blocks the Galway-based company from expanding into Europe.
The appeal has now been lodged to the EU Office for Harmonistation in the Internal Market.
The Office ruled in January that the company cannot sell its food in European restaurants.
The EU ruling granted Supermac’s a trademark – but blocked the company from using its brand name to sell meat, hamburgers, poultry, fish, chicken nuggets or onion rings.
It means that while there is technically no bar to Supermac’s restaurants appearing in Europe, the only thing customers would be able to buy from the restaurants menu is chips, drinks and deserts.
Fast food giant McDonald’s have long contested the expansion, claiming it would cause confusion among customers – a claim supported by the EU decision in January.
Speaking to FYI Galway in the past few minutes, Supermacs boss Pat McDonagh says they are optimistic that the appeal will be successful.
