Galway Bay fm newsroom – The vehicle stolen in a Mountbellew carjacking on Thursday was used to commit further crimes in Monaghan – including theft and the impersonation of a Garda.
A man remains in custody in Monaghan and is due before a special court sitting this evening.
Shortly before lunchtime on Thursday, a woman was knocked to the ground in the village of Mountbellew and bundled into the Hyundai Santa Fe jeep she was travelling in with her brother.
The male culprit drove the SUV with its two occupants inside, to a wooded area in Ballygar where he released them and then made off with the vehicle.
The jeep was later used to commit theft near Scotch Corner in Co. Monaghan – when the man pretended to be a Garda and stopped and robbed an 86 year old motorist.
The Santa Fe Jeep, which had been carjacked in Mountbellew on Thursday, was recovered by Gardai yesterday evening at Corlust, Castleshane.
A man, described as Irish and in his mid 40’s and of no fixed abode, was arrested by Gardai near Castleblayney.
He will appear before a special sitting of Cavan District Court this evening at 8pm charged in connection with the robbery.
He’ll then be interviewed by Mountbellew Gardai in the coming days about Thursday’s carjacking in the East Galway village.
Gardai say no link has been established between that incident and a similar incident in Dunmore last week, in which a car was stolen with an elderly woman inside.
However, they will be investigating the possibility that both events are connected.
