Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway farmers will be represented at a Farm Council meeting in Brussels next week.
Eyrecourt farmer and IFA Connacht Regional Chairperson Tom Turley is among a delegation of senior officer and commodity chairpersons who will attend the gathering.
The meeting will consider the market support measures that are needed to address what’s being described as a farming income crisis.
Discussions will also be held with Commission officials on direct payments and amendments to the Rural Development Plan.
The IFA group will meet with Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney following the meeting to consider the proposals from the European Council of Ministers.
Minister Coveney is being urged to demand the suspension of import tariffs on fertiliser, and to create greater competition on EU markets in a bid to reduce farmers’ costs.
