Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council is urging the people of Galway to exercise caution when lighting bonfires this Halloween weekend.
It’s issued a warning outlining a number of steps people should take to ensure they have a safe Halloween.
Galway County Council is warning people that bonfires should be built at least 60 feet away from houses, sheds, tree hedges and fences.
It says bonfires should also not be positioned near public roads and railway lines, or around electricity or telephone cables.
The local authority says petrol and paraffin should never be used to light fires, and domestic firelighters should be used instead.
It also says certain items are dangerous and should never be included in a bonfire – these include foam filled furniture, tyres, gas cylinders and cans of paint.
Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency is also asking people in Galway to keep the county’s air clean by not burning household waste on bonfires.
Galway County Council is also reminding people that fireworks are both dangerous and illegal, and should not be used.
