Galway Bay fm newsroom – Farmers in East Galway have given a cautious welcome to news that plans for a greenway from Athlone to Galway have been ‘paused.’
Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe decided to shelve plans for the Galway section of the cross-country greenway follows the presentation of a report by the National Roads Authority.
The report revealed that the majority of landowners in Galway were opposed to the route as it would split land and farms.
The Government will now proceed with completing a 43 kilometre section of the greenway between Maynooth and Westmeath.
Minister Donohoe says that having received the landowner consultation report, it is clear to him that there are significant concerns in communities in Galway and Roscommon.
He has paused the plan to allow consideration for the possibility of a new route that works locally.
Galway East T.D Paul Connaughton says that it’s important to the farmers that their concerns were heard.
Roy O’ Brien from the Irish Farmers Association says farmers are still concerned that the plans are not completely off the table.
