Galway Bay fm newsroom – It’s been revealed that the N17 is likely to be downgraded following the completion of the Gort to Tuam motorway.
The proposal came to light at this weeks’s meeting of the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District to discuss roads funding for the area.
Councillors heard that the move is being proposed by Transport Infastructure Ireland, formerly the NRA – and Galway County Council is against the move.
The downgrade would likely see a significant portion of the national primary road reclassified as a regional road with the opening of the Gort to Tuam motorway in early 2018.
As part of the construction of the 53km motorway, one million euro has been allocated towards improvement works on the N17 before any potential downgrade.
Speaking to our reporter David Nevin after the meeting at County Hall Councillor James Charity said any downgrade to regional status would be disasterous for the long-term future of the N17.
