The car was stopped at 5p.m on the motorway at Cappataggle, where 8 thousand euro worth of ecstasy was discovered.
Gardaí say the drugs were destined for the RAG Week market in Galway.
The two occupants of the car – two foreign national men in their 30s and 40s with Galway addresses – were arrested at the scene and were taken to Galway garda station for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
They were later released without charge and the drugs will now be examined by the garda forensic science laboratory.
