Galway Bay fm newsroom – As Ireland’s general election candidates take to the campaign trail this evening, Galway candidates are being urged to use the opportunity to safeguard the future of the Irish language.
Conradh na Gaeilge’s policy for the general election has been compiled by 80 Irish-language and Gaeltacht community groups, including all the Gaeltacht organisations across Galway.
The investment element of the policy is being supported by Údarás na Gaeltachta and Foras na Gaeilge.
This is the first time that such an agreed policy has been presented by the Irish language and Gaeltacht community.
The policy calls for an investment in an Irish-language and Gaeltacht plan to expand the use of Irish and to create new jobs.
It also calls for the appointment of an Irish-speaking senior Minister for Irish and for the Gaeltacht, so that there is an Irish language input at the Government table.
Finally, the organisation is calling for the establishment of a joint Oireachtas committee for the Irish language and Gaeltacht affairs of the same standing as other joint Oireachtas committees.
Peadar Mac Fhlannchadha of Conradh na Gaelige says the Irish language is vital to Galway’s economy.
