Galway Bay fm newsroom – A quality assurance review is being carried out at UHG, Merlin Park and Portiuncula Hospitals in a bid to tackle antibiotic resistance.
It’s part of a national quality assurance review being undertaken by the Health Information and Quality Authority.
The programme has been developed following a recent Chinese study which revealed that a newly discovered gene made some infectious bacteria resistant to currently available antibiotics.
HIQA says the discovery has emphasised the importance of vigilance when it comes to the proper use of antibacterials.
The national assurance review has been set up to recognise good practice, and identify scope for improvement in a bid to make all public acute hospitals safer.
The health watchdog says in a time of ever-increasing global travel, the risk of spread of resistant bacteria is heightened.
As a result, HIQA says it’s critically important that public hospitals such as UHG and Portiuncula have appropriate defences in place.
