Galway Bay fm newsroom – The ISPCA has released its report on the 2015 Ballinasloe Horse Fair.
Despite some concerns, the animal welfare charity says the overall impression of the fair was a positive one.
The ISPCA provided an inspectorate presence at October’s Ballinasloe Horse Fair on Sunday the 4th, Monday the 5th and Saturday the 10th.
They noted that due to the lack of a sulky track this year, sulkies and trotters were run up and down a car park, which could be considered an increased threat to public safety.
The group says that while the action represented no significant change from an animal welfare point of view, it resulted in unsavory scenes and a tense atmosphere.
However, the report found that there has been a marked improvement in the general standard of animal handling in recent years.
It also states that the quality of small animals for sale this year was far higher than ever before – with a record low of dogs removed by the ISPCA.
Just five animals were taken into care during the fair – these included a Shetland Pony with an injured eye, and four dogs who were voluntarily handed over.
The report concludes that steady progress has been made at the annual event, and the overall impression of the 2015 Ballinasloe Horse Fair was positive.
