Galway Bay fm newsroom – Saint Vincent de Paul says it’s committed to a grant of 45 thousand euro for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in Galway.
The charity has stood down a fund committee that allocated the grant to Amach! LGBT Galway for a resource centre last year.
The move follows a disagreement over governance arrangements between SVP locally and nationally.
Amach! has just been given approval for offices in the city centre.
The City Council has granted planning permission to Amach! LGBT Galway Limited to change ground floor retail space at Victoria Place into offices.
The building at The Mart, Victoria Place was last used by Aran Ferries.
It can now be used as a drop-in centre and resource space for Galway’s LGBT community.
In granting permission for the change of use, city planners imposed 8 conditions.
Earlier this month, the city council approved a controversial 25 thousand euro grant for Amach! towards the cost of renting its premises.
Officials with the council had said at the time, that it was their understanding the money would be used for the purchase of a building by the group and not for rent.
While St. Vincent de Paul has now stood down the fund committee that allocated 45 thousand euro to Amach! over three years, it says it’s committed to the grant.
In a statement, SVP says the National Management Council requires reasonable governance arrangements to be in place for the operation and management of the resource centre.
It says discussions have taken place with the Board of Amach! to try and reach an appropriate solution and are still ongoing.
