Galway Bay fm newsroom – Super trawlers coming in from other countries are depleting fish stocks along Galway’s coastline.
The huge fishing vessels are referred to as ‘sea monsters’ by people living in fishing communities across the world – due to their ability to catch huge quantities of fish.
Galway West TD Sean Kyne has raised the issue in the Dáil, where he said some of the world’s largest fishing trawlers are spending a lot of time in Irish waters.
He says these vessels have the capacity to catch and process quantities of fish way beyond allocated quotas.
In response, Marine Minister Simon Coveney has committed to enforce fisheries rules in a bid to protect stocks.
He says the Irish Naval Service and Sea Fisheries Protection Authority are using cutting edge technology to monitor the super-trawlers.
Deputy Kyne says the vessels have already been moved on by a number of countries.
