Further delays in clarification on Connemara seaweed harvesting rights

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The results of an audit to clarify seaweed harvesting rights in Connemara look set to be delayed until 2016.
The audit was ordered by the Department of the Environment earlier this year on lands within a mile of the seashore along the length of the county’s coastline.
It aims to establish which folios have a right to harvest seaweed.
The results of the audit, being carried out by Property Registration Authority at the bequest of Minister Paudie Coffey, were expected in September.
They’re now months overdue – and the Government has confirmed that work to establish the legal rights of folio seaweed harvesters is ongoing with no end in sight.
The issue was raised in the Seanad this week by Senator Trevor O’ Clochartaigh, who said clarification is urgently required on the issue.
The Sinn Fein Senator said that the audit is hugely important to local communities who are voicing concern over the potential corporatisation of the industry.
Speaking in response, Minister for Rural Affairs Ann Phelan said it’s a complex issue – and will take some time.
