Galway Bay fm newsroom – Four female lecturers at NUI Galway are suing the college over alleged gender discrimination.
Dr. Sylvie Lannegrand, Dr. Roisin Healy, Dr. Margaret Hodgins and Dr. Adrienne Gorman allege discrimination in a competition for promotion.
According to today’s Irish Times, the four female lecturers made unsuccessful applications for promotion between October 2008 and April 2009.
They claim they were treated less fairly in the process on the grounds of gender or family status.
The four academics also allege that adequate weight was not given to teaching and research abilities and the selection process was inconsistent, unfair and tainted.
NUIG denies the claims and says the female lecturers have no cause of action at the High Court, stating that the Workplace Relations Commission is a more appropriate forum to deal with complaints of employment discrimination.
Legal Counsel for the college has asked Mr Justice Donald Binchy this week to direct a preliminary trial of legal issues.
However, Senior Counsel for the lecturers are opposed to a preliminary trial arguing that it should be heard in full.
The judge will rule on the application for a preliminary trial next week.
