Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are plans for a coast guard station in Cleggan.
Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs Sean Kyne says the station will be based at the airstrip.
The airstrip site had originally been developed for an air connection between Connemara and Inisbofin.
However the service failed to become operational due to funding difficulties.
The OPW will seek planning permission for the project following the completion of a feasibility study on the site.
This will initially involve a temporary base with the possibility of developing a more permanent base.
Minister Kyne says a consultation process has also been opened on the future longterm use of the airstrips on Cleggan and Inishbofin.
