Galway Bay fm newsroom – There were 73 clinical cancer trials carried out at UHG last year – offering greater quality of life to patients and saving the hospital hundreds of thousands of euro.
An independent report commissioned by Cancer Trials Ireland has found that trials conducted at hospitals nationwide this year will save the HSE almost 3 million euro.
The report estimates that cancer trials can add 6 to 15 quality adjusted years of life for participants and can negate the need for conventional treatment including chemotherapy.
There were 73 active studies conducted at UHG last year – including radiotherapy studies, medicinal product studies, translational studies and observational studies.
147 new patients took part in trials during 2015, while a further 865 patients who participated in previous trials were followed up.
The figures were released to mark International Clinical Trials Day – which is today encouraging those diagnosed with cancer to ask their doctor about clinical trials.
Professor Maccon Keane, consultant oncologist at UHG, says the trials are invaluable and they also have an enormous knock on effect for the hospital.
