Council has no plans to introduce bilingual city parking signs

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The City Council says it’s not possible to include the English version of placenames on electronic car park information signs.
Earlier this month, Councillor Padraig Conneely said that the signs, which are as Gaeilge, confuse tourists and therefore impact on the local economy.
Councillor Conneely urged the council to consider including the English version on the signs, which indicate the location of a car park and how many vacant spaces are available.
However a spokesperson for the city council says it’s not possible to put both Irish and English placenames on electronic parking information signs due to limited size.
Under the Languages Act, the council is obliged to include bilingual information signs, or if it’s not possible to use both, then preference has to be given to the Irish version.
