Galway Bay fm newsroom – Overcrowding problems at UHG are continuing despite new figures revealing that the number of patients waiting on trolleys dropped by 15% percent over the past year.
Nurses say there has been a 100% increase in overcrowding in hospitals across the country since 2008.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation recorded just over 9,300 patients on trolleys last month, waiting for treatment.
539 of these were waiting for a bed at UHG.
However, the figure for UHG has dropped by 15%, when compared to the figure for March of last year.
Yesterday, all non-urgent surgeries were cancelled at the hospital for the second time in five days as a result of overcrowding.
Nurses say there’s a continuing lack of beds and staff right across the system – which continues to compromise patient care.
General Secretary of the INMO Liam Doran told Keith Finnegan that the problem will not be solved until extra beds are provided at UHG.
