Athenry will play a central role in the national 1916 commemorations tomorrow (Monday).
The State ceremony will get underway in the town tomorrow morning, and thousands are expected to attend the event.
Athenry is one of just four locations outside of Dublin to be chosen to host a 1916 state ceremony.
A synchronised wreath laying and tree planting ceremony will get underway in the town park at 9.30 tomorrow morning.
The formal event will open at 11.20 with Aeraíocht – a presentation and celebration of the cultural traditions of the county in song, music, dance and poetry by a variety of world-class performers.
A parade of colours will then get underway at Kenny Park, and will be led by St Patrick’s Band.
The State ceremony will also include a performance of ‘New Dawn,’ a specially commissioned uileann pipe piece inspired by Eamonn Ceannt and composed by Ger Fahy.
The day will continue with a series of family-friendly events in the town.
The full programme of activities is available at galway.ie.
