Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Teachers’ Union of Ireland says businesses could help to solve the funding crisis at GMIT.
The TUI is calling for the introduction of a one percent levy on business profits to help provide a funding boost to Institutes of Technology across Ireland.
The union says the corporate sector derives invaluable benefit from the Irish graduate labour pool.
It says the modest levy would facilitate the employment of thousands of additional academic staff, and could even be used to remove the 3,000 euro student registration fee.
TUI General Secretary John Mac Gabhann says students numbers are set to continually rise, and the IT funding crisis will only worsen unless positive steps are taken.
The union says the 1 percent levy on business profits could yield over 300 million euro a year for Institutes of Technology across the country.
