Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council is to dig a permanent flood relief channel in South Galway to prevent future flooding in the region.
A temporary channel was dug at Cahermore earlier this year following severe flooding, and the measure safeguarded a number of homes in the area.
The council is now preparing to lodge an application for funds under the Minor Works Flood Relief Scheme to put a permanent channel in place.
The channel would carry flood waters from South Galway to the sea at Dunguaire.
Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon says the move will go a long way to alleviate the serious flooding experienced by South Galway residents.
