Galway Bay fm newsroom – Supermac’s has lodged an appeal against an EU decision which blocks the Galway-based company from expanding into Europe.
The appeal has now been lodged to the EU Office for Harmonistation in the Internal Market.
The Office ruled in January that the company cannot sell its food in European restaurants.
The EU ruling granted Supermac’s a trademark – but blocked the company from using its brand name to sell meat, hamburgers, poultry, fish, chicken nuggets or onion rings.
It means that while there is technically no bar to Supermac’s restaurants appearing in Europe, the only thing customers would be able to buy from the restaurants menu is chips, drinks and deserts.
Fast food giant McDonald’s have long contested the expansion, claiming it would cause confusion among customers – a claim supported by the EU decision in January.
Speaking to FYI Galway in the past few minutes, Supermacs boss Pat McDonagh says they are optimistic that the appeal will be successful.
