Galway Bay fm newsroom – A suicide prevention demonstration has been launched at NUI Galway in the last few minutes.
The ‘Send Silence Packing’ initiative includes a public display of 131 backpacks, to represent the average number of students who die by suicide each year.
The campaign is designed to raise awareness about the impact of suicide, connect students to mental health services and inspire action for suicide prevention.
It’s organised by website pleasetalk.org in association with support group 3T’s and the Union of Students of Ireland.
The ‘Send Silence Packing’ demonstration will run until 3 this afternoon at NUI Galway.
Co-ordinator Scott Ahearn says it’s about tackling stigma and encouraging open conversation about mental health.
