Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are calls for improvements to the road network in South Connemara as a new fire station is officially launched in Carraroe this morning.
The new facility will provide service in the area from Kilkerrin in west Connemara along the coast as far as Spiddal.
However, there are concerns that the condition of the roads in the region is an unnecessary added risk to the fire crew that will operate out of the station.
A Fire Brigade service for the south Connemara area has been sought for years and this Monday’s launch is an historic event.
The Brigade members have undergone a rigorous selection and training process and their immediate area of concern will be from Cill Chiaráin in west Connemara along the coast to Spiddal.
They have two Fire Engines and one Jeep at their disposal.
The new Brigade now joins the Clifden Fire Brigade and the Galway Fire Brigade in providing services west of the Corrib.
Carraroe Station commander, Edward Ó Sé, say they can be on the road in four minutes.
But the terrain in which the new service will operate has drawn criticism from the chairman of Coiste Chearta Chonamara, Seán Ó Conghaile.
He says the state of the roads could imperil the firemen and women in urgent situations and the says a strong effort must be made to improve the roads network in Connemara.
