Galway Bay fm newsroom – A protest is underway this morning (5/2) over the controversial proposed closure of the R339 between Cartymore and Cashla.
Over 20 affected residents are picketing the gates of a work site at Cartymore owned by SISK, the contractor responsible for carrying out the planned works.
Protestors are pledging to continue their protest action until March 21st, the start date for the planned closure.
Today’s action follows a protest held at County Hall earlier this week during which hundreds of submissions on the planned closure were handed into the local authority.
The proposed works are expected to last three weeks and will involve the tie-in of the new overbridge road with the R339 at both ends.
Locals feel that there has been a lack of consultation between affected residents and contractors SISK and the County Council.
Paul Farnon, whose business is based in Cartymore, says locals won’t give up until they get a result.
