Galway Bay fm newsroom – The ongoing controversy over the air service to the Aran Islands has been discussed this afternoon in the European Parliament.
The issue was raised by MEP for this region, Marian Harkin.
In parliament today, she’s called for special attention to be paid to all EU islands, in particular the need to tackle depopulation, and the need for better air services.
MEP Harkin told the European Parliament that up to now access to the Aran Islands has been by fixed wing aircraft.
She says the islanders’ concerns must be taken into consideration when the time comes to put a long-term arrangement in place for the islands.
An interim contract with long-time air service provider Aer Arann will come to an end in October.
Speaking to FYI Galway from Strasbourg, MEP Harkin says it’s up to national government to ensure the survival of Galway’s island communities.
