Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway farmers are set to share in a 9 million euro ‘goodwill’ fund for lands obtained through compulsory purchase order.
The payments will be made to farmers and landowners who did not obstruct the purchase of land by the state to facilitate national roads projects including the outer city bypass.
Minister Michael Ring has signed off on the ‘goodwill’ fund in recent days, following discussions between the Department of Transport and the IFA.
The fruits of those discussions will see landowners across the county receive 3 thousand euro per acre of land obtained through CPO, from a national pot of 9 million euro.
It’s a welcome step forward for farmers, following the termination of the scheme by Leo Varadkar in 2012 – at which time payments were 5 thousand euro per acre.
The fund primarily relates to major projects undertaken in the past four years – including the controversial planned Galway City Outer Bypass.
According to the Irish Times, the fund will also cover over sixty minor projects nationwide, including realignment works.
