Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway city councillor says the taxpayers money is being ‘wasted’ on free legal aid.
Councillor Mike Cubbard says last year almost 51 million euro was spent on legal aid – and a significant portion of this was spent on repeat offenders.
He says a new system should be introduced where a person is only entitled to free legal aid on one occasion.
Councillor Cubbard says the current system under which a repeat offender is treated in the same way as a first time offender is ‘baffling.’
