Over 7000 Galway people diagnosed with cancer last year

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Over 7300 people were diagnosed with cancer at Galway’s public hospitals in 2014.
The figure has been revealed in the Saolta West Northwest Hospital’s Group Cancer Centre annual report for 2014.
7,342 people were newly diagnosed with cancer at UHG, Merlin Park and Portiuncula Hospitals during 2014.
The Saolta group says its ambition is to create a UHG Cancer Centre which will provide integrated multidisciplinary care to those who receive a cancer diagnosis.
Almost 300 people were diagnosed with breast cancer across Galway last year – over 10 thousand patients attended the group’s breast outpatient clinic.
The report also outlines increases in the number of patients seen by Galway’s radiology department.
Almost 16,000 people received a CT scan, 1630 had an MRI scan and over 6000 had an ultrasound scan.
Meanwhile, almost 40 Galway people availed of patient support services provided by the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Centre during 2014.
Across the hospitals group, which includes hospitals in Galway, Donegal, Mayo, Limerick and Roscommon – over 21 thousand people received inpatient cancer treatment in 2014.
