Galway Bay Fm news – A local man has died in an early morning crash in Loughrea after he was struck by a car around 5.30 am.
The man who was walking at the time was aged 26 and is a resident of Loughrea town. He died following the incident on the Athenry Road on the edge of the town and not far from the the Loughrea Hotel and Spa.
Loughrea Gardai say the man was pronounced dead at scene. His body was taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, where a post mortem is to be arranged.
The male driver, 19 years, sole occupant of the car, was uninjured.
The Athenry-Loughrea Road on the outskirts of the town is currently closed to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and diversions are in place.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have travelled the N66 Loughrea-Galway Road, through Loughrea Town between 1.30am and 5.30am this morning
