Galway Bay fm newsroom – Plans for a new domestic violence refuge in the city have taken a step forward.
Cope Galway has applied for planning permission to change the old Magdalene Convent at Forster Street into a refuge.
The convent at 47 Forster Street, which was donated to Cope Galway by the Sisters of Mercy, is a protected structure.
The application includes the demolition of the existing boiler house, stores and rear corridor.
The new build would provide 9 self-contained residential units, staff accommodation, offices, outreach facilities, meeting rooms and a childcare facility.
The current facility at Waterside House, has capacity to accommodate 6 women and 15 children at any given time.
Cope says it’s now unfit for purpose and is based on single room bed-sit type accommodation for whole families, and can’t facilitate on site cooking or an outdoor play area for children.
A decision on the new domestic violence refuge at Forster Street is expected from the city council in February.
