Galway Bay fm newsroom – There was disagreement at last evening’s meeting of Galway City Council over the location of a new 25 million euro cultural center for the city.
The proposed centre would encompass a new city library, music performance and visual arts space, admin and production space, and a dedicated music venue.
Councillors heard that the first phase of the development could be on track by the end of 2017 at the 4.5 acre Dyke Road carpark site.
Chief Executive Brendan McGrath indicated that the campus could also include the Black Box Theatre, when he said the facility was past its sell by date and needed to be ‘incorporated into something new’.
However, a number of councillors expressed concern over the location for the new centre and asked if alternative sites were available.
Councillor Peter Keane suggested that South Park would be a more suitable location – he was supported by Councillors Declan McDonnell and Pearce Flannery, who raised concerns over the loss of car parking at the Dyke Road site.
Chief Executive Brendan McGrath told Councillors that he had consulted with city planners and no other sites were suitable or available.
Despite the concerns, Councillors were in agreement on the importance of the project and voted unanimously to support its continued development.
Councillor Niall McNelis says Galway has been crying out for the proposed cultural campus for years.
