Galway Bay fm newsroom – A new medical device manufacturing facility at Medtronic is expected to create further expansion opportunities for the company in Galway.
Medtronic employs over 3,000 people in the city following the acquisition of Mervue-based company Covidien in January.
Its new 20,000 square feet facility at Ballybrit hosts Medtronic’s largest clean room, and will be used to produce the company’s ground-breaking drug-coated balloon device.
The balloons are used as an interventional treatment of peripheral artery disease, which is a high risk factor for heart attack and stroke.
Minister Richard Bruton says Medtronic is a driving force in Galway’s growing medtech sector.
Meanwhile, earlier today the minister announced 65 jobs at a new manufacturing facility in Ballybrit.
German medical device company Phenox is creating the jobs over the next five years.
