Galway City and County Councils are being urged to extend the aviation licence for Carnmore Airport, just days ahead of the expiration of the current license.
The current lease between both Councils and Carnmore Aviation Limited is set to cease on the 15th of this month.
Major commercial activity at the airport ended in 2011 with the annoucement by Aer Arann that it would cease all services at the site.
The airport closed in 2013 – but re-opened in January of this year to private and limited commercial air traffic under a new license.
Councillor Joe Byrne says that since then, the site has accomodated vital landings for a range of interests, including multi-national companies, the Air Corps, the Coast Guard and ambulance aviation.
He says it’s vital that on the 16th of December, a situation doesn’t arise where licenses are expired, the gates are closed, and all activity at the site has once again ceased.
Fine Gael Councillor Byrne says the current functions should not be terminated until a long term plan for the site is agreed.
