Galway Bay fm newsroom – Contracts have been signed this afternoon to bring cutting edge high-speed broadband to Galway.
The Department of Communications, Gas Networks Ireland and Shell signed the contracts around lunchtime – and work is set to begin within days.
The project will facilitate the development of fibre optic cable set to run from the Corrib gas field in Killala, Co. Mayo to Galway.
Unlike normal broadband which uses telephone lines, fibre optic broadband runs underground, and offers significantly increased speeds.
Labour Senator Lorraine Higgins says it’s a major step foward for the county and will be a major draw for many multi-national companies.
Senator Higgins says it’s effects will be wide reaching.
