Galway Bay fm newsroom – The town clock in Ballinasloe looks set to remain out of operation for the foreseeable future as confusion over its repair continues.
Cllrs have been told that the four faced clock, housed at St. John’s Church, is owned by Galway County Council – but the local authority is not responsible for its upkeep.
Cathaoirleach Councillor Michael Finnerty has asked how the Council could possibly own something yet have no responsbility for its repair.
He claims that a precedent had previously been set through funding provided by Ballinasloe Town Council towards the upkeep of the clock.
Director of Services Catherine McConnell says the cost of repairs would reach ‘a six figure sum’
Councillors agree it’s hard to see how such funds could be afforded, even in the event of Galway County Council being liable for the works.
Councillor Finnerty says the restoration of the clock looks set to be a very long process.
