Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway East TD is calling on the Social Protection Minister to reverse what are being billed ‘extremely divisive’ changes being made to the Rural Social Scheme.
Deputy Anne Rabbitte says revised rules mean new participants will now only be able to avail of the vital scheme for a maximum of six years.
Previously, the Rural Social Scheme was administered on an open-ended basis, with contracts renewed every year.
Those already on the scheme will be unaffected by the changes – but Fianna Fail Deputy Rabbitte says it means the overall programme is now one of fundamental inequality.
Deputy Rabbitte is calling on Minister Leo Varadkar to reverse the changes before damage is done to the long standing reputation of the Rural Social Scheme.
