Galway Bay fm newsroom – Questions have been raised about the delay in collection of drug paraphernalia in the city.
At a meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee, Councillor Niall McNelis said that gardaí were recently called after drugs paraphernalia was discovered near Westside around 9 o’ clock at night.
He said the person who made the call was told that gardaí in Salthill did not have the necessary equipment to clean up such items.
Councillor McNelis stated that it’s not the job of the gardaí to collect needles found in public places and that it’s the city council’s responsibility.
Director of Services with the city council, Tom Connell said city council staff are available from 5.30a.m and can clear up such items at that point on a case by case basis.
Councillor McNelis says it took the council up to 3 weeks to clear one particular site of drugs paraphernalia, which is unacceptable.
