Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Education Minister says he cannot intervene following the recent cancellation of a number of city bus services – as they are not under the remit of his department.
The matter has been raised in the Seanad by Galway Senator Trevor O’Clochartaigh.
It follows the cancellation of services from Westside to Claddagh, Scoil Einde to Seacreast, and Claddagh to Westside via Salthill – which were pulled after the Halloween mid-term.
A ‘Save Our Bus’ protest march was led by the Claddagh School band last week to highlight the issue.
Speaking in the Seanad, Senator O’Clochartaigh told Education Minister Richard Bruton that school children are suffering.
However, the Education Minister said his department is not responsible for the services in question, as they were not designated school services.
He says the cancellation was a commercial decision made by Bus Eireann, and his Department had no say in the matter.
