Galway Bay fm newsroom – 100 thousand euro in funding has been ringfenced for Galway under the 2016 REDZ scheme.
REDZ or ‘Rural Economic Development Zones’ funding aims to stimulate economic development in rural towns and their hinterlands.
Nationally, just over €5.3 million is being approved for 41 projects nationwide.
Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon says the scheme will stimulate activity at a local level.
Meanwhile, a 400 thousand euro REDZ allocation for Knock airport in Mayo is also expected to provide a significant boost to Galway tourism.
The funding will be used to develop a state of the art Visitor Discovery Centre at the airport, which will feature Galway as a suggested destination for tourists.
Galway’s local authorities are part of a major partnership with Ireland West Airport, which it’s hoped will help attract more visitors to the city and county.
