Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway East TD is describing President Michael D. Higgins comments on Fidel Castro as ‘disturbing’, ‘disappointing’ and ‘blinkered’.
Deputy Ciaran Cannon claims that the appraisal of the former Cuban president as a ‘giant among global leaders’ is inappropriate and shows a rare lapse of judgement.
He argues that the correct course of action would be for President Higgins to issue a further statement withdrawing his remarks.
Deputy Cannon says it’s a sentiment shared within the Fine Gael party, which is disappointed with the statement.
Mr Higgins’ office yesterday insisted any suggestion that the statement neglected human rights concerns was ‘unwarranted’.
Deputy Cannon says while it’s normal for state heads to offer sympathies on the death of a leader, President Higgins went too far.
