Concern as Galway landfill site reaches capacity

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are concerns that a landfill site in Galway has already reached its limit for this year set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
It joins landfill sites in Wicklow, Kildare, Meath, Carlow and Mayo which have all reached their planned limits this month, rather than at the end of the year.
There is concern now that rubbish could remain uncollected by the side of the road in the run up to Christmas.
According to today’s Irish Times, the three regional waste-management planning offices issued a report to local authorities saying landfill space had been used up for the year.
However, it’s understood there is space at the new East Galway Residual Landfill Site, which will not be fully operational until next year.
In some counties, various agencies have met to try and work out a temporary allowance to exceed this year’s limits for waste, until the new year.
