Galway Bay fm newsroom – There is concern about plans for an injection clinic for drug users in the city.
The Minister with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin is expected to announce the plans at an event in London today.
The first of the medically supervised injection rooms will open in Dublin next year, followed shortly afterwards by Cork, Galway and Limerick.
In an address to the London School of Economics today, Minister Ó Ríordáin will outline plans to de-criminalise the possession of small amounts of drugs for personal use.
He says that drug addiction is something that needs to be tackled outside the criminal justice system.
City Councillor Mike Cubbard says there would be legitimate concern about such an injection centre in the city.
Councillor Cubbard says that drug dealers need to be tackled separately to drug users.
