Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council has asked the government to extend the deadline for the town and village renewal scheme.
Concerns have been raised over the timeline set down for the delivery of the scheme across the county.
The deadline for proposals under the scheme is Monday week, the 26th of September.
At this week’s meeting of Tuam Municipal Authority, Alan Farrell Senior Executive Officer presented details of the government initiative, announced in August.
Under the scheme, the entire county will receive 380 thousand euro for a maximum of eight projects which must reach completion by year end.
Fine Gael councillor Pete Roche stated the timeframe was too short for any significant projects to be carried out.
He also queried why a county such as Galway with a population of 180 thousand should get the same funding as county Leitrim with a far smaller population.
Alan Farrell told the meeting representations have been made to the department to request a possible extension of the deadline.
