Galway Bay fm newsroom – Contractors will shortly begin work on tackling the spread of Japanese knotweed along major roads across the county.
The works will involve spraying the weed with a specialised chemical to kill it off.
Japanese Knotweed has been spotted with increasing frequency in the city and county in recent months – and is commonly described as a major threat to both man and nature.
The hardy weed is extremely difficult to kill and can force its way through concrete or brick, damaging houses and roads – and also suffocates native plant species.
The works will involve repeated spraying over a 4 or 5 year period in a bid to manage its spread.
The County Council plans to initially tackle the growth of Japanese knotweed along the N59 and other national routes across the county.
However, due to limited resources, works on regional and local roads can only be carried out on a case-by-case basis if the weed is causing traffic or other hazards.
