Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Connacht IFA chair says anyone who failed to act on prior knowledge of controversial payments made to the former General Secretary will be out of the organisation.
Tom Turley says there’s a sense of shame amongst farmers across the west over the revelations.
Former General Secretary Pat Smith earned almost one million euro between 2013 and 2014.
Tom Turley says going forward, the salary for the position will be a matter of public record to ensure such a situation never happens again.
He says he’s sickened that Pat Smith was earning ‘lotto figures’ at a time when many farmers were struggling to put food on the table.
It follows a call by the Eyrecourt Branch of the IFA on Friday for President Eddie Downey and Treasurer Jer Bergin to resign from their positions over the scandal.
However, a meeting over the weekend of 60 Connacht officers indicated their support for the current president in dealing with the matter.
Speaking to Keith Finnegan, Tom Turley is reassuring farmers across Galway this morning that investigations are ongoing.
