Galway Bay fm newsroom – A meeting of Connacht IFA officers over the weekend has indicated their support for President Eddie Downey – despite a call from the Eyrecourt branch for him to resign his position.
It follows the stepping down of General Secretary Pat Smith after the revelation that he earned almost one million euro between 2013 and 2014.
The motion put forward by the Eyrecourt branch to the Galway County Executive on Friday called for the resignation of President Eddie Downey.
It also called for the resignation of National Treasurer Jer Bergin in the wake of the Pat Smith pay scandal.
The IFA says a meeting of 60 Connacht officers held last Saturday evening ‘strongly endorsed the President and Executive Council in dealing decisively with the remuneration of the former General Secretary’.
However, no official vote was taken on the matter.
Meanwhile, the Eyrecourt motion will be put to a meeting of the Galway County Branch – but a date for when that meeting might take place has not yet been established.
