Call for rethink of Galway turlough flood relief study

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A recently announced flood relief project to study flood-prone turloughs across South Galway is being branded a waste of scarce resources.
Galway East Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon says that the study by the Geological Survey of Ireland and the OPW is diverting funds which, he argues, could be put to far better use building flood defences in the region.
The project will study turloughs in Galway, Roscommon and Longford.
Work is already underway, with teams monitoring current water levels within turloughs and analyzing historic rainfall and flooding in affected regions.
Deputy Cannon says that several extensive studies in South Galway over the past two decades have already identified solutions to individual turloughs.
He says South Galway is likely the most studied region in the country – and the focus should be on delivering flood defences.
