Galway Bay Fm newsroom-Galway start-up medical devices firm Bluedrop Medical has landed €600,000 in private funding, allowing it to speed getting its device to reduce the number of amputations on the market.
Bluedrop’s device performs a daily scan on a patients feet allowing doctors to detect foot ulcers in diabetics earlier, which if left untreated could result in amputations.
With up to one-in-four diabetics developing foot ulcers at some stage of their lives, the slow-healing properties (taking months, not weeks) can prove uncomfortable and dangerous to patients.
Around 440 amputations are required annually in Ireland due to these ulcers, but Bluedrop’s device could bring that figure down dramatically.
Bluedrop’s founders are software engineers Chris Murphy from Mayo and Simon Kiersey, from Wicklow.
According to the website Siliconrepublic.com the €600,000 investment will speed up key hires in the areas of software engineering, computer vision, medical device R&D, quality and regulatory affairs.
It will also allow the company to complete the next phase of product development as well as the conducting of pilot clinical work on the device.
The firm intends to raise further funding within the next 12 months to allow it finalise product development, obtain FDA approval and launch the product in the US
